Fighting With Style

If you're like me and play a combat oriented character, then odds are you've got some vague idea of how your character fights. I mean, lets face it, most of us probably don't picture our characters standing there, bobbing slightly, and attacking every few seconds once our moves are off cooldown. This is where reference material comes in handy!

Have you drawn inspiration for how a character does combat from another source? A movie, or a video-game, or perhaps a real-life example? You are not alone. Your character's combat style can, in addition to spicing things up when emoting strikes, tell us a little bit about your character's personality.

For example, my main, Huvi, fights rather unorthodoxly. She employs a lot of tumbling maneuvers and leaping attacks. The broad side of her sword sees almost as much use as the sharp end for deflecting purposes. Overall her style is reminiscent of Yun-Seong from the Soul Calibur series. The erratic movements, the aerial leaps, these all tell you about her entheusiasm. Even if she doesn't want to do it, she's excited to fight.

Contrast that to Hiram Gallowsford, who is the epitome of orthodox in style. He's been trained in a fencing style similar to Destreza.  The circle on the floor with the lines denoting attack form, the sword and the dagger, that's how he operates in a fight. His motions get a little more, shall we say, emphasized in worgen form, but he maintains stance and keeps it in check. Not only does this style convey discipline, but it also carries a certain posh air to it. It's almost like a ballroom dance with weapons.

So, how do you fight?

HEY LOOK WALL OF TEXT INCOMING.

Spoilers abound. THIS IS LARGELY the fighting-to-win-and-survive type scenario. Wil likes his violence, and nine times out of ten he'd prefer a raw and dirty fist fight to actually rushing in for the kill.

Wil is usually driven by raw rage and determination alone. His armor is not heavy, thick, and protective – light plate and leather, it is mostly used to avoid outright stabs and slashes, make his punches heavier, and house various insects within valves and hatches. Said insects are used for ranged combat, crowd control, and minor self-buffs.

They are often changed and upgraded, but the basic types are as follows:

Paralytics– usually a small swarm controlled by an extremely low frequency whistles. They are set to aim for the attacker's vulnerable parts, the nose, exposed skin, tear ducts. Paralysis sets in within fifteen seconds. A vast majority of Wil's bugs are simply paralytics, leeches, hornets, mites, depending on the situation.

Hallucinogens – if these bite you, you see rainbows and have a very interesting time just moving around.

Incinerating – these are odd. They literally explode and let out a burst of flammable substance upon command.

Adrenaline shots – Wil has substance abuse issues, as you may guess. Often, when injured or just in need of a boost, he would pull out a bug with an implanted stinger and use it like a slightly more portable, mobile, and hardy syringe.

There are also leeches that remove poisons from his system, silk-threaders to aid the stitching of wounds, antiseptics, etc, etc, etc. Wil prefers to start at range, debilitate if he knows he has the time and the advantage – and charge.

Usually, he acts as  meatshield due to his extremely high pain tolerance and ability to self-heal and sustain his energies. However, this also often leaves him reckless, his bones broken and his body still going even after the injuries – the recovery times can be ridiculous for the man. He has little grace and rhythm while fighting. It really all boils down to smash-things-harder-hope-they-die. He also has a tendency to cause more pain than probably necessary, often making his style of combat inefficient and his chest and back less and less prettier every time the sweater is of.

Hand-to-hand, Wil relies on stamina and sadistic drive. A skilled and agile opponent, however, would have a very fair fighting chance if they are smart and careful enough.

Raglan has an Achilles thing going on and wants to be remembered in the legends of his people after he dies, like BEARDFIST.

He tends to fight fairly when against a worthy opponent, preferring to trade mighty blows than win quickly.  It works for him because of his ridiculous hardiness and luck, and because when he allows someone to hit him, he is allowing them to land the kind of blow he wants them to land rather than one that could kill him.  It makes glorious single combat even more impressive if the combatants repeatedly get back to their feet after sustaining bone-shattering injuries.

Against multiple, ignominious enemies, he simply defends himself by blocking everything with his shoulderplates and strikes with quick, heavy blows from his hammer when it is safe to do so.  His timing, judgement and awareness of everything around him are well honed.

In a bar fight or brawl, Raglan will kick like a mule and bite like a crocodile, swing his fists around like clubs, or use his weight and strength to grapple people until they submit.

Niami dislikes violence and will end fights as fast as possible, mostly by blinding people with flashes of light, polymorphing, or disintegrating them.  If none of those work, then teleporting herself and her friends away works just as well.  Occasionally she will be angry or drunk enough to lose her shit and afflict people with horrible, unspeakable curses involving drawn-out, agonizing death or relentless maddening visions that tear at them with the relentless claws of insanity.  In the only case of this happening so far, she calmed down and released them almost immediately.

Vandy’s not a fighter. It would be quite easy for a professional to subdue her if she doesn’t lobotomize them first with a nice Mind Spike.

Sometimes, though, certain people, ah, “encourage” her.

She’s like a cross between a tavern brawler and a … and a cat.

Back when she was a drunk, she got into a lot of tavern brawls – they were never about winning, it was about how much hurt she could take. And enjoy.

Typically she starts out with some well placed throws, but the woman’s got some anger issues. Get her enraged, and she turns into an adrenaline-fueled fury of fists, fingernails and teeth. Push her beyond that, and the Shadow comes out to play.

Halent dislikes fighting, immensely. However, he dislikes killing more. Being a Death Knight, these two things are inevitable. However, on the chance he gets way off the wrong foot with a character he really shouldn't be fighting, he will use his powers to the best of his ability without killing.

His keeps his body restrained, focusing all of the dark energies ina  single point within himself so that he looks and feels less like a death knight outside of combat. Unleashed, its not pretty. However, all his dark power and shadowy finesse is for show. He merely tries to make his opponent run from him. Should they do so, then he has both won and spared a life. If they do not run, well, he's still no pushover.

He doesn't run himself. Not that he doesn't back out, he just doesn't run. He walks to any and all destinations, including in a fight. WIth Chains of Ice, Death Grip, Death Coil, Strangulate, and an endless ammount of ghouls at his disposal, what does he need to run for? When using his greataxe, he tends to swing with the blunt sides unless he must kill. A signature move of his is to Death Grip his opponent through the air, and whack them back like a baseball bat.

For satopping fights when his opponent's are weakened, he has an empowered Mind Freeze ability that causes his target to black out considering they can't withstand it. While they are out, he will either take his leave, or call/take them to someone to watch them. He may have been fighting, but he's still civil, the injured require help.

...That is a wonderful image...just so you know.

Because, I typically picture bar brawls to be about 80% Dwarf and 20% human.

Seriously...getting hit by Halent's axe when he Death Grips you is such a bitch move, but he's won the rolls.

Aside from his abilities with Shadows, Civardi fights like I personally fight.

It's a mixture of Jiu Jitsu and Tai jitsu, with a smattering of kenpo karate. Basic Hand to hand combat. nothing fancy, flippy or acrobatic. His legs never go above his hips and his hands never go below it.

He utlilizes his speed, flexibility and swift attacks to weak spots. There is no fair fighting for him. His goal the moment a fight starts is to end it and make sure it stays ended. Though depending on who he is dealing with things can shift. He will incapacitate if needed to get away.

Civardi utilizes a variety of blades, daggers and knives as well. Small weapons easily concealed save for the two daggers on his hips. Each blade is coated in a toxin or venom designed to either kill or nuetralize, depending on what he hopes with happen. With his blades he moves in with swift slashes, aiming for creases in armor, hands, legs, sides, any place he can set up a fast slash, not to damage but to inject.

He uses a moderated brand of smoke bomb, having laced the original concoction with pepper to create a form of pepper spray, preventing beasts from sniffing him out through the smoke and to hinder eyes and mouth's.

He experiments constantly with different toxins and poisons, he will mix anything together and see if it has an effect, always seeking to improve on what he has. He physically ingests certain poisons and toxins to keep immunities up and has a good stock of anti-toxins and venoms on hand just in case. He has used anything from plant extracts, animal venoms/scales/saliva/claws etc etc, to drugs and even alcohol.

If you needed a good reference, I suppose Special forces hand to hand combat would be Civ. He's fast, brutal, and effective. He does utilize his shadows, shadowstepping when needed but he tries to avoid it due to severe energy costs. He can pull off three shadowsteps, two if he needs to bring someone with him, before he is too exhausted to even vanish (Hence his massive appetite). He will vanish when needed as well, but pulling shadows around him that fast is also another large energy cost.

His weapons are all silent. He dislikes guns and grenades, anything that makes a loud noise to potentially give him away, preferring instead short blades (For speed) and a small, single hand crossbow he keeps at the small of his back. A 6inch blade, his punch dagger, remains concealed under a bracer, the blade activated with a snap of the wrist. among other weapons he has hidden on his person. A last resort weapon if he finds himself unarmed and in close quarters. The weapon is made for powerful strikes, not slashes.

Sidoni will fight as dirty as she needs to, to win.  Although very skilled with sabre or khopesh-style blades, and more than familiar with tridents or glaives, her favoured style is to get right into melee and use her hands (adorned with brass knuckles).  When fighting a man, his genitals are in imminent danger.  She'll use any possible tool at her disposal, she'll use people's own clothing against them, she'll use nails and teeth and bottles and dirt.  She's even hidden weapons in a fake baby belly.  There isn't really any honour, there's only winning.

I think she would probably not use poison or any subtle sort of attack.  Sid is very in-your-face and if she's going to hurt someone, she's going to make sure they know it's her.

I need to post at least two here...because the first is going to feel horridly short.

Yggdrasila

As a marksman, Ygg tries very...very hard not to get close. In fact, with her bow she is more of a sniper (G'day!) than anything. When it isn't imperative that she be moving, or while on a bit of a solo trip, she uses a very heavy bow with a high-tension string. The 'weight' (Tension) is usually between forty-five and sixty pounds, (a weight typically reserved for men) and the bow itself is made of dense wood or flexible alloys of mithril and steel. The arrows are dense, sharp, but never cruel. They are designed to slip straight through armor, flesh, and bone, and exit the other side of the body. They are incredibly difficult to break or splinter, and the arrowheads are just pointed extensions of the shafts. Yggdrasila prefers high vantage points and plenty of camouflage.

When mounted she uses a slightly lighter bow and similar arrows. She is not known to use any poisons or toxins. (Inhumane, in her opinion.)

She's been known to use her bow as a baseball bat. Particularly when ghouls are thrown at her. (Halent. :|)

Again, she hates it when you get close. Typically seen with a glaive (The polearm), spear, or dual-swords. She's not particularly skilled with any of them, and all of her movements are sweeping, aggressive motions to make her adversaries back off.

Oddly enough, unarmed she is much more in control. Like most Kaldorei she fights with her palms and uses soft, disabling blows. However, if she must injure someone, she will use her legs, typically evading strikes and countering with blows to the torso and face.

Rhoswenn

There are few things more vicious than Rhoswenn when she's angry, I'd wager. Though, I cannot be certain.

She doesn't fight for survival. If, for any reason she believes she will lose, she will run. That being said, when Rhoswenn fights, it is to cause pain, or to get something, such as a spell component.

Biting, clawing, stomping and shoving are simple tactics she will take if you happen to get too close to her. She's rather tenacious as well, so trying to hit her or push her off should she cling to you, is very difficult. Think of a frenzied or rabid raccoon. Kinda like that.

More often than not, she will stuff her hand into her bag and pull out some random object with which to incapacitate/injure her foes. Though the components are always different (And the spells frequently fail) there are some common effects often seen.

Snares: Typically by way of some sort of root, arm, tentacle, what have you. Bursting out of whatever surface is nearby, or even out of thin air. Depending on the type of component, the trap may be stationary, or seem to be alive. Rhoswenn is found of the type that wrap around her victims, and then shove themselves down their throats, cutting off airflow.

Blinding: This is a constant, as Rhoswenn works with fear as often as with pain. Whether by the blood of her own palm suddenly flooding the target's eyes, or the solidified shadows of a void-walker becoming a hood, she will ensure that they do not see her next move.

Cuts: Though often a jumble of spells all pushed together, this might be seen as fleshcraft in some ways, but always requires a sharp component. These injuries are typically not deep, but numerous as they split along the length of an arm, the back, the chest, or elsewhere. For the most part, this type of spell is used to distract the foe by causing pain.

Side-effects come with every spell she casts. >_> Some temporary...some permanent. (Aka, she's forever infertile due to all the terrible magic she's toyed with in her life. :D) Rhoswenn loves to cause pain, to watch people's expressions change.
And she likes stealing eyes.

Loves...stealing eyes...

Tisho

Tisho is a "dual wielding blood DPS" -- yes, I know, the game does not support it. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be possible ICly. He uses twin one-handed axes called Oondasta, and he has a wickedly long reach.

Armor-wise, he does wear plate just like any other death knight. The difference is, his has been stripped down some to allow for freedom of movement and, more importantly, TO leave gaps. His head, neck, hands, feet, and upper arms are all completely bare. In other places, he just has plate strapped over dark padded leather, such as on his upper thighs. All of these spots are critical weak points that he uses to his advantage.

See, he is a host for a swarm of blood worms and the majority of his abilities are, you guessed it, blood. If he lets his foe hurt him, he'll start bleeding, and the more he bleeds, the more likely he's going to win. Imagine fighting off a giant dead troll that has worms pouring out of every orifice, all of them lunging for prey, while huge bubbles of plague-infested blood that will burn through flesh and bone fill the air and cover the ground.

Tisho doesn't really have to fight at all. He's more of a berserker, recklessly charging into attacks. All he really has to do is outlast and then smash apart any remaining enemies.

Maybe other characters later--this is a subject I've thought of quite a bit, but I don't want to get too carried away!

For Laciel, I haven't given much thought about fighting style. She's a warlock, and not an athletic one. I certainly reference magical-girl anime artwork to pose her in drawings, but...

Holistin's much easier to pin down. Watch Return of the Jedi when Luke goes ape**** after Vader teases him about his sister, and you'll see how Holistin wields a warhammer-- aggressive, unrefined, but tireless. It's easy to protect oneself from an assault like that, but Holistin's raw power can wear a lesser opponent down.

Gio...well. He is a dual wielding, swirling dervish of pointy swords and diseases and biting cold. He fights like a rogue more than a plate wearing wall of plague and ice, preferring a stealthy ambush to a berserker's charge so he can end the fight quickly and cleanly. He still does wear plate however, because he can and has a thing for matching plate sets. Also, he can reinforce the plate with thick sheets of ice if needed.

If caught in the open, however, his blows are precise and surgical. He doesn't mindlessly slam the business end of his weapons into the target opting instead to exploit gaps in armour, bad form, or just vulnerabilities in general to afflict his opponent with either: A nasty case of frostbite/frost fever/blood plague/severe haemorrhage. He will dance circles around/leap above the target to confuse, befuddle and exhaust so he can get the openings he needs and he -loves- doing this to casters. Gio also makes sure to hit the target with frigid, freezing winds (hurr howling blast spam) whenever he can, to slow his opponent even more.

TL;DR he hurls cold things at people and fights like a jedi on a sugar rush.

Dorien's magic is mainly defensive and utility based. He creates a variety of shields of different strengths and permeability. He has one or two healing and fire spells based on the Light, but it's nothing amazing. Mainly better for setting paper/cloth on fire, instead of people. He CAN technically just create a bubble shield over someone's head and let them suffocate but that's... Like, super last resort for him.

To compliment his defensive magic, he has a lot of hand-to-hand/grab anything you can use combat. Sure he has knives and can use a quarterstaff competently, but he doesn't really like weapons unless it's, once again, last resort. Fisticuffs can be considered a good old sport, but the moment you bring in a blade, you've upped the stakes.

He's a sudden, quick and dirty fighter, preferring to use anything around him as an advantage. He'll rarely meet someone on equal ground or be up front, rather dancing around the individual and jab at exposed points. Dory will not shy away from breaking limbs - usually legs - in order to get the person he's fighting to back off or lose morale, but he draws the line at killing.

He fights to get away, and he will run the moment there's an opening that lets him do so. He's got the speed for a quick fight, but no stamina for a long drawn out one, not to mention if he's going against someone taller/larger than him.... Which is a lot of people, when he's 5'9".

Ooo!

Lesse...

Dyna

Her training began as very traditional paladin style, don't kick a man while he's down, mercy when possible type fighting, but she has always loved weaponry. She also has a not-so-secret love of brawling and violence, though she struggles with that, considering she's supposed to be upholding Chivalry and finding Peaceful Solutions When Possible.

Anyway, her combat style has changed quite a lot due to RP happening. Where she used to be forgiving or hesitant, now she's more inclined to use force- deadly, if she feels the situation dictates it, though that isn't terribly often. She's almost always in armor of one sort or another, and her movements aren't as fast as she wishes they were, but there's a great deal of force behind them. She hits first, asks questions later.

She prefers a pole arm for non-fatal uses and reach, and doesn't react well to being crept up on. What she lacks in speed, she makes up for in force- though when attacking while angry, she frequently loses track of 'strategy' and becoming much less effective as a result.

Ashtivar

Bearform solves every problem.

But no, really, she doesn't do a ton of fighting- especially not outside of forms. She's been in a few scuffles, mostly with other farm lasses, but is not any sort of trained or skilled warrior. She hits hard and it hurts her hand and she's not very fond of hurting her hand.

When placed in a combat situation, she will almost always shift to bearform and maul/chew/sit on/charge/eat her enemies. If Bear becomes overwhelmed, she may briefly shift to her Worgen form, as her wits tend to be dampened while a bear, and it's difficult to rear up to shake people off her back.

Ashes tends to use her paws and massive girth to try to overpower those she comes up against. Not that there have been all that many, but it's slowly changing as she becomes more involved in Argentum Legion operations.

Sholaad trained under Boulestraad the Mighty, learning the venerated vindicator style of fighting. Specializing in heavy weaponry, mainly two handed hammers and maces, and built enough to be clad in the heaviest of armors, Sholaad uses this defense to outlast his opponent. His swings may occasionally miss, but when they land, they land HARD. In addition, when fighting opponents, he can use the Light to exorcise the evil from them, causing a "burning and purging" feeling within the opponent, usually weakening them enough to kill them or slow them down enough for a final landing of the hammer.

He also enfuses his weaponry with the Light, causing a combination of the purging and pain from blunt force in his swings. His Judgment, the Light manifesting itself into a burning massive hammer lands upon the heads of his opponents, sealing their fate in the eyes of the Judge.

He does not attack those who cannot defend themselves. He only places his Judgment in Defense of the Light or to seal it's Retribution.

Alurien is really skilled with a gun as far as weapons go. He's a pretty good shot at long range, but he's not really used to sitting and waiting like a deadshot might. He kind of grew up around war, so he's at his best when there's a lot of chaos going on at the same time. Soldier mode. That said, he's not squeamish about violence and he can get pretty creative with a knife if he needs to.

He's an okay boxer in the grand scheme of things but there are times he can be a bit sloppy (or overly tense). And that's because he is a Worgen, so he has to take care with when he's fighting in a playful sort of brawl, versus really hating someone and wanting to hurt them. And if it crosses a line, he typically gets whatever he can on the other person and breaks something (typically a wrist to put their hands out of commission first).

The guy's got incredible control on his other form because it's so deeply ingrained into who he is. If his control does slip, he's going to be ruthless in a fight and try to inflict some permanent damage. You'll find him in his Worgen form if he's about to kill something, honestly. He's a huge, monstrous sort or beast like that. He might look slow like that because of his size, but he's not! So take care 8) because you'll rarely -- if ever -- find him in that form (away from the GLF at least), and if you do, it's Not Gud.

That said, he's kind of really good at disabling undead in Worgen form. Lot of experience fighting them on the front lines.

Also um. Really strong arms because carrying a bulky rifle around or using bow constantly gives everyone tickets to the gun show idk

Oh man, awesome topic! Okay, wall of text, ala me time.

Firstly starting with Mister Henrik Berkelley. He's exceptionally good with a gun -- he has a lot of guns, and not just because he likes them. No, Henrik has a lot of guns because it is the only form of protection he has that he still feels secure utilizing since his injuries. Besides guns, Henrik used to be quite capable with a rapier, and was an excellent fencer. He's certainly not a large man, and while he isn't some waif-like flower, he realized early on that when it came to melee combat he would do better to use his speed and grace rather than trying to win through brute force he just doesn't have. Along the same vein, Henrik fights hand to hand much like he fences -- avoidance and countering, being quick and hitting key targets on the body. UNFORTUNATELY FOR HIM, his leg is all fucked up so trying to use fancy footwork and twist his body out of the way or in for a strike usually ends up wrenching his leg and dropping him like a sack of hammers (who ever drops sacks of hammers -- or carries hammers in large quantities in a sack to begin with?). Still, he fights smart not strong. He also knows how to break bones while exerting the least amount of effort, and where most of the major arteries are in a human (though isn't entirely sure about the other races... yet.)

Rhys' fighting style: Run away. (also known as the Cheese It Maneuver)

Hefeydd is actually kind of a pacifist -- he's a total hippie and hurting people and things makes him feel totally bummed out because its way heavy etc etc. However, he can hit someone reasonably hard if it comes down to it, but doesn't really have any skill beyond punching dudes in the face or tackling them around the middle. In general, he'll grapple to STOP a fight -- and is generally pretty good at holds.

What is this, I don't even....

Forgemight is a kilted midget with a huge hammer on his back. This hammer is mostly decoration, sadly, as Durdin prefers to fight with fists. Drink! Brawl! Drink! Brawl! He is a runemaster by class, though a shaman by on-lookers. His form is decorated with patterns and shapes visible against his mostly uncovered body. Activating these runes, he can enhance his abilities; such as increased speed, improved damage, hardened skin, and so on.

His most prominent fighting rune is on his fists. Known as the Rune of Flowing Steel. Meant to represent the look of steel being melted down to be shaped into weaponry. Activated, this rune allows him to decide whether or not his punches are lethal. They will be softened if his opponent is close to death, and will not apply force. Friendly brawls, this is typically activated. However, in a fight he must kill, he leaves it off.

His hammer is a last resort. A larger version of a Wildhammer's Stormhammer, he channels his shamanic strength through it. Striking a surface, he can create quakes throughout its form. He can either use it as a finishing blow, or attempt to scare away the fight he doesn't want to pick (which is a rare occurance).

Tory's superpower is a poor upbringing. He's learned growing up as a little guy in a rough environment that it's better to not get into at fight at all, but if it's unavoidable, be quiet, fast, and dirty, fight like a cornered rat. They can't hurt you if they're already on the ground. And then run like hell, cause they've probably got friends somewhere nearby.

Before Alex went into "professional" investigation jobs and being a courier, she was much more of a tavern brawler than much else (no matter how she held her drink). Admittedly, I sort of nabbed the idea from browsing YouTube (skip to 3:00) on a boring day and just sort of really wanted a character that revolved around their fists, rather than daggers, poisons, and shadows. Thus, Alexandria was born. Although I focused on the quick punches and throws, rather than being able to SUDDENLY JUMP HIGH IN THE AIR. She... probably couldn't do that.

Basically, she likes her fists. Shaken, not stirred.

This is a great topic. I hadn't really thought about it at all until I read this. Then, well, my characters spoke up with 'thunderous voices' and let me know exactly how they fight. I was pleasantly surprised.

Oyam-

She doesn't fight. That is to say she won't fight back in defense of herself. She often apologizes to those who wish to harm her. Feeling they must have confused her for someone else. She feels sorry for them, even as they hurt her. She even see's any injuries she sustains as proof of the poor antagonists confusion. She does get angry in defense of her friends however and will use her best 'angry voice' and attempt to use snarky words to put the attackers off. This often fails as she seldom can come off as mean. Most of the time during a confrontation, she is able to completely fluster and confuse the opponent to the point they leave with out incident. Which in her mind, is what they really meant to do all along. This is usually a result of her trouble understanding the different accents/languages around her. Saying words as she hears them, or confusing the meaning of the words she hears, leads to headaches for those around her. Effectively pulling the wind from any sails bent on physical attack. (And most commonly driving the would be antagonist to heavy drinking.)

Tabina Mallory-

Tabina tries not to fight. She can and will if the situation warrants it however. Her mind set is - let people do what they want, as long as it doesn't involve her. If or when it does she can fist fight with the best of them. She can take a punch. She has the ability to disconnect from physical pain to herself. This is not a magical or mystical talent, this is a mental trick she needed to survive. She has no squeamish bone in her body. Blood, intestines, rotted flesh, crunching bone, violence, death, putrid smells, etc none of this will cause her to blink. Her years of skinning has taught her many wicked and not so proper uses for her knife. As a hunter /survivalist she carries a Crossbow and a pouch of color coded arrows, many of her own making and design. Her motto of long range attacking is One shot One kill. She has a veritable bag of goodies to help her fulfill this motto. She carries three vials tucked into her belt. One filled with hallucinogenic toad slime. One filled with anti-coagulant bat saliva. And one filled with powdered phosphorescent mosses. She will dip her arrows into these if the fight calls for it. She also has recently been working on a set of arrows for retreat purposes. She has made a 'whistler', that creates an ear splitting scream when fired to disorient the target. She recently scrapped the prototype for a 'splitter' arrow, it was designed to separate in flight and confuse the attacker to the targets location.  Her current project is the 'disabler' (based on the idea of RL rubber bullets) but the whole thing is looking disastrous. Summary - Avoids fighting, if cant be avoided it gets messy, no qualms about killing another.

Sarala-

(<Worgen Druid> Who I keep neglecting despite of the fact she fascinates me.) She would never tolerate a fight in her home or any place she happens to be at. Her likely response would be to smack the offender with her spoon, a broom or her chubby hand before grasping them by the ear and chastising them for their behavior all the way to the door. Very much the 'Matronly' type, she tends mother everyone, even the instigator. (In my head, I can so see her behaving this way.- Her house host to a group of injured, a pie in the oven, when ruffians come looking for trouble. Standing on the stoop, broom in hand, she berates them turning them away. Telling them to come back at a more appropriate time for that sort of thing. <3)

Edited to add - Apparently I lied. Tabina informed me is does get squeamish over eyeballs. Hence the reason she only brain tans with cow brains and not the animals own. I didn't know. My apologies. (Also she feels grossed out by fat pregnant bellies and infants, but that's a whole other thing.)

Elunaara is an ambush fighter for the most part. Her favourite tactic is to swoop down as a bird, shift forms, and let her body weight knock her opponent to the ground, where she can stab/slice/jabjabjab with her dagger, or simply stab as she drops. The main downfall with this is timing, as she can't shift too early, for the simple reason of physics and gravity, nor can she shift too late, lest she want to blunder into her enemy half-shifted. Her dagger and spear techniques rely mostly on waiting until she can dodge a strike and then counter attack, aiming for weak points in armour. She also uses her cat form, pouncing from hiding spots, or frantically tearing through enemies with tooth and claw. When she feels she is in real danger, Elu fights recklessly, like a cornered animal. She's been known to grab onto an opponent, drag them over a cliff or high place with her, then untangle herself and shift into a bird, flying to safety while her enemy goes splat.

She also has few qualms about using poisons, or other methods that may seem dishonourable. If she can poison an enemy settlement or outpost in order to avoid a direct battle, she will (and has).

Interesting thread you have here, Vaishino. Kudos!

I often like to think about how my characters fight, or at least try to fight. Let’s see here…

Alyraen:

She’s an all but powerless cripple, capable only of the most basic Druidic spells, Flight Form and a messy, uncontrolled Moonkin form. Her primary means of self-defence is either running away, or if backed into a corner, releasing the magical energy stored up in the stone at the end of her staff with either a small, controlled burst or a one-shot blast of varying strength, depending on how much energy is stored.

Kallona:

She’s one of my most combat-oriented characters, so, she’s pretty decent at what she does. Being a total technophile and former Sentinel, she’s armed for almost every situation and has the tactics to match. Her preferred situation, long range (30-250 meters), she’ll use her rifle and pick off everything she can from the shadows, or wait for her target if she’s after someone in particular. At this range, she has a minute or two to more or less sit around and plink any targets that veer into her crosshairs before she is in danger of discovery and then promptly relocates, to start over if necessary.

Mid-range (30-10 meters) is a bit of a different story. At this range, she’ll transition from her rifle to grenades and a revolver once they’re in range, while keeping as mobile as she can to disrupt any attackers. She’d want to try to slip away at this range while her foe is still easily escapable, and fall back to a long ranged position again.

At a short range (10-0) meters, she’s not too happy. There’s no space to use her rifle, it’s too close for explosives, so she has to use her revolver, gadgets or the plain ol’ knife. She’d want to kill or disable her opponent as soon as possible so that she could get away.

Vallanis:

She’s a duellist/fencer through and through. Her occupation requires her to be both agile and active for long periods of time and thus she is neither exceptionally strong or tough; but, she has stamina and agility. Furthermore, her armour is usually a light plate breastplate over leather, the some scale mail. So, expect an awful lot of dodges, parries and rolls, counters, and all that annoying, disruptive stuff. If the situation calls for it, she has a few tricks up her sleeve. Being a botanist, she usually has a vial or two of acid, hallucinogen or poison on her, which she will use if necessary. While she is perfectly capable of using the Light in combat, she prefers not to unless facing an undead, demonic or otherwise unholy foe, as it tends to take more focus than she would like, and has a lesser effect on the living.

Kee fences, even in the most wildly inappropriate situation, and it is the dumb luck that has followed his life for years that allows him to survive and even win in most cases.  He uses the terrain around him not out of any sense of tactical advantage but because really, why would you fight on the ground when you could fight on a table, a bar, up a staircase, on a conveyor belt in a goblin foundry, at the mouth of an active volcano, or dangling from ropes underneath an out of control zeppelin as it careens through Stormwind airspace with only ten minutes until the elementium bomb explodes?

Also he tends to prefer rapier and dagger.  Dual-wield and all.

Langsford-

Langsford does not fight. He'll employ some semi-nasty trick or another, such as turning one into a sheep and/or slowing them down, but then proceeds to run away like a little girl. Get him in an actual scuffle and he'll flail around like a fish out of water and will proceed to get his reanimated rear kicked quite thoroughly. His skill in combat uselessness is extraordinary.

Verenor-

Verenor is the worst paladin ever. And by worst paladin ever, I mean Verenor enjoys inflicting the smiting and violence far too much than is decent. He likes two-handed weapons, as he's all about offense and has a rather dim concept of defense and personal safety. His combat style is rather lacking in grace or style; Verenor is all about simple and savage blows. Easiest way to fight when one totes around an axe nearly the same size as they are. He rarely invokes the blessings or smitings of the Light in combat, as he tends to use it only in a pinch or to gain the upper hand. Generally he fights fairly, but if his opponent uses dirty tricks, then durn it, he's gonna use dirty tactics right back. Or just beat on them harder until they stop moving. He almost never tries to stop and grant mercy or allow the opponent to yield.... but then again, he spends most of his time cleaving undead and trolls, so they're not even going to get mercy in the first place.

Character:

Gevudan fights primarily by way of dual-wielding two-handed swords. He's not generally as quick as most dual-wielders are, but instead he puts focus on powerful strikes to deal a lot of damage if they hit or stagger an opponent who blocks or parries the strike. It's not typically a very fancy fighting style, but he does occasionally add the odd spin or flourish where the flow of combat allows for it. The other method he typically refers to is leaping from place to place in combat, either for the purposes of stunning an opponent where he lands or simply getting to areas of the fight that are blocked off, although he wouldn't usually do this in a fight against a single person.

Aside from that, he can be an opportunist at times, for instance punching or using his claws and teeth where it seems like a good idea. He's also fairly proficient with ranged weapons, for instance the rifle and revolver he normally carries, and he has used those from time to time where the situation doesn't allow for the gap between him and whatever he's fighting to be closed either by charging or leaping.

Gravemoss uses her size to her advantage, seeing as she's a big Tauren woman clad entirely in plate. She's not graceful, she's not fancy, she just goes in, swings her axe and knocks stuff down (she takes the hits she's meant to take).

Although Matojo had semi-formal training as a warrior, now that he's a druid he's changed things up since he uh, spends a lot of time in bear form. He basically tries to be a huge pain in the ass by stunning and otherwise distracting whatever he's fighting to take its attention away from his party-mates.

Phaedra doesn't fight, she gets other people to fight for her, and she mends their wounds while claiming a portion of any money that they make for whatever it is they're doing.

Thomi, a warlock on this server, relies on fire and does not make much use of her demons. She keeps a dagger in each boot and prefers pants to robes because pants give her freedom of movement that robes don't, and she is actually fairly adept at hand-to-hand combat (but not compared to someone that does it all the time- she can hold her own).

Now I want to put more thought into this, hm.

Reg is a knight, first and foremost. Basically, he tries to avoid prolonging fights, and will fight fairly whenever he can--no cheap shots, etc. Of course, ths leads to him beng brutally efficient in battle--he is an Arms warrior in-game, and I use a lot of those moves for inspiration as to his fighting style. He favors swords when at all possible, but he's quite skilled with anything that's got a blade. And his weapons have to have blades; being a Crusader but lacking the ability to use the Light, he applies holy oil to his weaponry, and it tends to work better with swords and the like. He hits hard, using his Forsaken strength to his advantage, but lacks the sheer mass to take a bunch of blows. He's not especially fancy, and tends to be almost terrifyingly single-minded when he's really into the fight.

...Unfortunately for him? Arms warriors have bleed effects as a major part of their strategy. He is Forsaken, and blood makes him hungry. A severely injured and enraged Reg, staunch avoider of red meat or not, may wind up trying to eat your face. But he'd feel really bad about it later!
